Destroying, and Reconstructing Narrative

Course: Physics in Digital Media / Creative Computing / Media Literacy

Tools: Blender (Physics Simulation, Rigid Body Dynamics, Particle Systems)

Themes: Chaos & Order, Creativity as Recombination, Controlled Randomness, Emergent Storytelling

1. Introduction: Chaos, Order, and the Alchemy of Creativity

"Creation is destruction’s twin. To build something new, we must first unmake the old, whether in physics, art, or storytelling."

This assignment explores the dialectic between chaos and order, a fundamental tension in nature, science, and creativity. In physics, entropy measures disorder; in art, deconstruction precedes reinvention. Even in mythology, creation often emerges from void (tabula rasa) or destruction (e.g., the Phoenix, Ragnarök, or the Big Bang).

Creativity as a Game of Dice

Creativity is not mere originality, it is recombination with intent. Like rolling dice, we:

  1. Gather disparate elements (objects, ideas, references).
  2. Disrupt their expected relationships (destroy, collide, randomize).
  3. Reorganize the chaos into a new pattern (a narrative, a structure, a meaning).

Your task: Build a scene, destroy it with physics, then reconstruct a narrative from the wreckage.
